The new section of Via Mobile forms the start of the covered and glazed transport system on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds at the new South Entrance to the trade fair.
The aim was to create the shortest and thus a resource-saving connection, between the South Entrance to the fair and Hall 12. By examining various scenarios, a reduction of the bridge's distance of about 10m could be achieved.
In order to minimize the logistical restrictions in the outdoor area behind the Cargo Center, the via was to be supported as a bridge structure with only two concrete column structures.
The multi-functional column constructions are located on intentional side areas, also contain the escape stairs and form "oases" for the visitors and the microclimate with seating and greenery.
The design is characterized by efficiency in construction and aesthetics. Optimization of the supporting structure is achieved by reduced spans of the steel truss.
The interior concept envisages a fusion of the designs of two strong geometries. The new via integrates itself naturally between the South Entrance to the trade fair and Hall 12, taking up references from both buildings and yet retaining its independence.
Important external references to the city of Frankfurt are staged through panoramic panes in the façade. Visual connections to the Torhaus, the Messeturm and the "show side" Emser Brücke guide visitors to their destination and prevent a tunnel effect.
In addition, parts of the façade are planted with greenery as a visual screen to the offices in the base building of the trade fair entrance and the parking garage spindle in order to deliberately create privacy.
The new 120m long section completes the Via Mobile for a total of 1700m.
Completion of the section is scheduled to coincide with the opening of the new trade fair entrance on Europaallee. Construction work is scheduled to start in 2024.
